Cleaning a pool doesn’t have to be a back-breaking ordeal. If you skip the expensive automatic robots, a simple manual pool vacuum does the job just fine. You just need the right technique.
A standard manual setup is stripped down to three basics. A vacuum head. A long hose. And a telescopic pole. That’s it. No batteries. No complex circuitry. Just physics. Specifically, suction.
Here is the step-by-step process for hooking up and using your manual pool vacuum without losing your mind or creating air locks in your pump.

Preparing the Equipment
Start by assembling the pole. Attach the vacuum head to one end of the telescopic pole. You are looking for a clear connector point on the top of the head. Once secured, you have a tool that lets you reach every corner of the floor without jumping in.
Next, connect the vacuum hose. Attach one end of the hose to the bottom of the vacuum head. Keep the other end of the hose outside the pool for now. You don’t want water everywhere before you are ready.
Priming the System
This is the part most people mess up. You cannot just throw the hose in and expect suction. Air is the enemy here.
Hold the pole in your hand. Lower the vacuum head into the pool. Guide the hose in with it until the head is resting on the floor. Keep the loose end of the hose above the water line.
Now, locate your filter skimmer. This is the wall intake where water enters your filtration system.
Creating the Suction
Plug the loose end of the hose into the skimmer’s water intake nozzle. This is the critical moment. Watch the vacuum head.
You will see air bubbles rising from the head. That is the air being pushed out by the incoming water. Wait. Do not start moving yet.
Watch until the bubbles stop. When the hose is completely full of water, the suction will engage. The head will flatten against the pool floor. It will feel tight. It is ready.
Vacuuming the Floor
Check your filter settings. Switch the nozzle to the intake mode. You want the system sucking water in, not circulating it.
Now you can move. Guide the vacuum head along the floor using the telescopic pole. Move slowly. If you move too fast, you will stir up dirt instead of capturing it. Watch the dirt disappear into the head.

When you are done, disconnect the hose from the filter skimmer. The job is complete. Your pool floor is clean.
